The suburb naming process

To establish new suburbs, Council must apply to the Victorian State Government, through the Department of Transport, Planning & Local Infrastructure. Council must comply with the ‘Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010 Version 2’, in accordance with Part 2 of the Geographic Place Names Act (1998).
Suburb Naming Advisory Committee
A representative Committee was formed to help Council develop the shortlist of names. The Committee met on a number of occasions to contribute feedback from their constituent groups and apply the naming guidelines.
The committee is made up of the following groups and representatives:
- Councillors
- Wurundjeri Council
- Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative
- Urban Development Institute of Australia
- Greater Melton Chamber of Commerce
- Melton Historical Society
- Melton Family History Group
- Community representatives
- Council officers
Property Development Advisory Committee
Proposed suburb boundaries were drafted by Council officers for review and endorsement by Council’s Property Development Advisory Committee, comprised of specialist Council officers and Councillors.
